Rather than being viewed as housing of last resort, many people actively choose to live there because it is affordable, stable, and offers an excellent quality of life.
The benefits extend beyond housing. When people are not burdened by excessive rent, they have more disposable income to spend on travel, education, cultural activities, and local businesses. Affordable housing becomes an investment in residents' quality of life rather than simply a social welfare program.
As land becomes increasingly scarce in growing cities, policymakers should recognize that housing affordability is not only about increasing supply. It also requires long-term public investment and regulations that ensure the benefits of urban growth are shared by the people who live there.
