Welcome to Rockridge Voice — a new independent media site created by and for Rockridge residents, launched in January of 2026. It’s a place to share stories, spark ideas, and celebrate what makes Rockridge special... and we couldn’t be more excited.
Buoyed by an extraordinary wave of neighborhood support and a shared desire to continue their community service after many years at the Rockridge News, Anna Marks and Jo Ellis recognized an opportunity to create a welcoming media platform—one that represents the rich diversity of voices in our neighborhood, reports on a broad spectrum of topics and perspectives, and fosters meaningful conversation and participation.
This is a community-powered project at heart, fueled by desire, creativity, curiosity, and passion. It reflects our districts amazing mix of writers and designers, photographers and filmmakers, artists and art lovers, parents, educators, teachers, learners, and visionaries who call Rockridge home.
Special thank you to Don and Bobbie Kinkead, whose dedication, enthusiasm and encouragement helped spark this new community media platform. Back in the early 1970s, the neighborhood was slowly recovering from years of devastation due to the construction of Highway 24 and BART, which ran right through the center of the district, demolishing 1,400 private homes and negatively impacting neighborhood retail as a result.
When the City intended to remove additional single-family homes to make room for a high-rise near the soon-to-be-open BART station, the Kinkeads steeped up to help neighbors get their voices heard. By posting flyers, hosting gatherings, and spreading the word, they brought people together and built a strong neighborhood coalition to push back, and to keep the neighborhood well informed in the process. That spirit of community organizing eventually led Don’s founding of the Rockridge News in 1986.
Rockridge Voice intends to continue Don and Bobbie’s legacy of providing free, independent, hyper-local news that informs, connects, and engages our active and involved community members… and we thank them for their vision, and their blessings.
