Oakland city officials are calling on residents to help shape the future of their neighborhoods through feedback on the city’s Draft Land Use Framework, a key component of the ongoing General Plan Update. The draft, open for public review through April 23, outlines a long-term vision for how Oakland can grow in a more connected, equitable, and sustainable way.

At its core, the framework focuses on creating mixed-use neighborhoods where housing, services, and amenities are located close together. City planners say this approach is designed to make everyday life more convenient while reducing reliance on cars. The proposal emphasizes building more housing near transit corridors and commercial hubs, allowing residents easier access to jobs, schools, and essential services.

The draft also reflects priorities that community members have voiced over the past several years. These include improving public transit reliability, enhancing street safety, maintaining parks and open spaces, and ensuring that neighborhoods have access to resources like grocery stores and libraries. By integrating these elements into land use planning, the city hopes to foster communities that are both livable and resilient.

Public Participation Encouraged

Public participation is a central part of the process. Officials are encouraging residents to review the draft and share their input in several ways, including submitting comments online, emailing feedback directly to city planners, or attending one of many scheduled public meetings and workshops. These events are being held across Oakland to ensure that residents from different districts have opportunities to engage and voice their perspectives.

The city has scheduled a range of meetings with local commissions and community groups throughout late March and April. Workshops will take place in multiple neighborhoods, giving residents a chance to discuss how the proposed changes could affect their communities. City leaders say this feedback will play a critical role in refining the framework before it is finalized.

The Planning and Building Department, which is leading the effort, oversees regulations related to Oakland’s growth and development. Through initiatives like the General Plan Update, the department aims to create a built environment that supports the health, safety, and well-being of all residents.

Officials describe the Draft Land Use Framework as both a roadmap and a conversation starter. While it lays out strategies for future development, it is also intended to reflect the values and needs of Oakland’s diverse communities. By participating in the review process, residents have an opportunity to directly influence how their neighborhoods evolve in the years ahead.

More information about the framework, along with details on upcoming events and how to participate, is available on the city’s General Plan Update website.
