As community interest in the proposed development at 6230 Claremont continues to grow, residents should be aware of both the formal review process still ahead and the opportunities currently available to learn more about the project. Although a voluntary community meeting is scheduled for June 18, (see second announcement below), the project's official public comment period has not yet begun.

Under the City’s Planning Code, administrative projects such as 6230 Claremont require a 17-day public notice period following completion of the required California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) analysis, which is not expected for approximately 12 weeks.

During that formal notice period, nearby property owners and tenants will receive mailed notices, project signage will be posted on-site, and City staff will collect and respond to public questions and concerns as part of the development review process.

Educational Housing Forum with RNSH and UBA

Rockridge Neighbors for Sensible Housing (RNSH) is incredibly excited to announce that we are partnering with the Upper Broadway Advocates (UBA) to host an Educational Housing Forum on:

Saturday, June 13th
2pm to 4pm
Claremont Middle School, 5750 College Avenue

State housing laws can be dense and confusing, so we are putting this forum together to break them down in plain English and look at exactly how they affect Rockridge. We are working on 3D models for both projects (see Blood Bank model below) so we can truly visualize what is being planned.

The forum will focus on both the 6230 Claremont proposal and the nearby TJ Towers project. If you haven’t heard, two skyscrapers for senior living (31 stories and 25 stories) are being proposed at the College Avenue TJ’s location, and NO replacement supermarket will be built.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get informed, ask questions in a relaxed setting, and discuss how we can best protect our neighborhood’s character.

Thursday, June 18, 6:30pm–7:30pm

Meeting with Ellis Partners (the developer behind 6230 Claremont) — Let’s pack the room!

Although this meeting is formally scheduled around site design and tree removal requirements, City planning staff will be there, and the agenda is open for us to discuss the broader project. This is our primary evening opportunity to show up, look the decision-makers in the eye, and make our voices heard.

Thursday, June 18
6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Rockridge Branch of the Oakland Public Library
5366 College Avenue

The meeting is only one hour long, so it’s imperative that we are organized, focused, and present in large numbers to ensure our shared priorities are addressed:

  • Traffic & Operations: Discussing delivery logistics, safety, and service management on Florio Street
  • Design & Scale: Advocating for lower height, code-compliant setbacks, and meaningful step backs to reduce how this invasive, massive structure will impact the community.
  • Landscape & Trees: Ensuring that no tree-cutting permits are issued prematurely before the entire development is fully approved and construction is actually ready to begin

If you work during the day or have family commitments that keep you from afternoon city hearings, this evening meeting is your moment to stand up and support your neighbors. We truly need everyone there—from our long-time residents to local families and younger neighbors. A full room shows the city that we are a unified, deeply invested community.

Please RSVP to Torygriffith@gmail.com. Let us know if you can make it so we can keep you updated on any last-minute changes and share tailored talking points to help you prep your questions.
