The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) invites community members from across the Bay Area to come together for the 2026 Oakland Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Saturday, October 17, at Snow Park adjacent to Lake Merritt. The annual event brings together suicide loss survivors, people with lived experience, families, friends, advocates, mental health professionals, and community partners to honor loved ones, raise awareness, and support lifesaving suicide prevention efforts.
Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, underscoring the need for greater understanding, education, and prevention. Through the Out of the Darkness Walks, AFSP works to create a culture that is smarter about mental health by funding research, advocating for public policy, supporting those affected by suicide, and expanding education programs in schools, workplaces, and communities.

“Every step taken at the Out of the Darkness Walk represents hope,” says volunteer and Rockridge resident Ellen Lafferty. “Whether you're walking in memory of someone you've lost, in support of someone struggling, or because you believe every life is worth saving, your participation helps strengthen suicide prevention efforts and reminds people they are not alone.”
The Oakland Community Walk offers a welcoming, supportive environment where participants can connect with others who understand the impact of suicide. The event includes an opening ceremony, activities centered on hope and healing, community resource tables, and AFSP’s Honor Beads program, which recognizes the many personal connections participants have to the cause. The walk spans approximately one to three miles, making it accessible for individuals and families of all ages and abilities.
