Update on 6230 Claremont Avenue Project

Update on 6230 Claremont Avenue Project

Update from the group “Rockridge Neighbors for Sensible Housing”
(as of February 7, 2026)

The proposed development at 6230 Claremont Avenue is still under review. As previously reported, the city planner has returned the developer’s application to Ellis with requests for additional information. Those questions have not yet been answered.

While we wait, our community group remains actively engaged. We continue to:

  • Speak at Planning Commission meetings
  • Review zoning and technical planning details
  • Submit formal letters to the public record

Our goal remains the same: reduce the building’s size and mass so it fits the surrounding neighborhood. We are advocating for a maximum height of 55 feet, along with appropriate setbacks and step-ups to better match the scale of nearby homes.

Why Traffic Safety Matters Most

Traffic safety is our top concern. Claremont Avenue has experienced two pedestrian deaths in just the past two years. Adding more than 300 senior residents to this already dangerous stretch of road raises serious safety questions that cannot be ignored.

This is not a theoretical issue—it is a documented, ongoing problem.

Traffic Safety Facts on Claremont Avenue

Pedestrian Fatalities

  • February 1, 2026: A 72-year-old man, Billy Grant, was struck and killed in the 6000 block of Claremont Avenue, directly adjacent to the proposed 6230 Claremont site.
  • July 8, 2025: A 67-year-old man, Roderick Nared, was struck and killed at the intersection of Claremont Avenue and The Uplands.

Crash Data (2020–Present)

  • Severe injuries: City officials reported at a 2025 traffic safety meeting that Claremont Avenue has seen seven severe-injury crashes since 2013, many of them occurring after 2020.
  • Total collisions: At least 46 vehicle-related crashes have occurred on Claremont Avenue in the past decade, with a high percentage involving pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Primary causes:
    1) Failure to Yield – 26%
    2) Unsafe Speed – 15%

High Injury Network Status

Claremont Avenue is officially part of the city’s High Injury Network (HIN). Streets in the HIN make up only about 8–15% of all city streets, yet they account for over 60% of fatal and severe traffic injuries.
