Safer Rockridge, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, announced that it will extend its pilot program adding a second professional, unarmed security patrol car in lower Rockridge for an additional three months, from February through April 2026. The extension is made possible by strong financial support from neighborhood residents and local businesses.
Safer Rockridge was founded in response to a significant rise in crime in Oakland that peaked in 2013. Following a well-attended community forum and grassroots fundraising campaign, residents voiced broad support for a neighborhood-based security model rooted in shared responsibility.
Community feedback emphasized two guiding principles: patrol officers should remain unarmed, and core safety services should be available to all residents regardless of whether they contribute financially. From these guidelines, Safer Rockridge was born.
Today, Safer Rockridge provides professional, unarmed patrol services throughout lower Rockridge, supported entirely by voluntary contributions. All board members and volunteers serve without compensation.
In addition to routine patrols, Safer Rockridge offers a range of services designed to enhance neighborhood safety and peace of mind. During patrol hours, residents may request safety escorts for special circumstances by calling the patrol line at 877-272-8765.
Escorts are intended for occasional use and are provided on an availability basis. The organization also offers alarm-response services and a vacation watch program, both accessible through online request forms.
The recently launched second patrol car pilot has operated four nights per week. While the original funding goal has not yet been reached, community contributions have been sufficient to continue the program through April. Safer Rockridge is seeking additional support to make the second patrol car permanent. Approximately 75 additional households contributing $30 per month would fully fund the expanded service.
In 2025, Safer Rockridge launched a quarterly newsletter to keep subscribers informed about patrol updates, service enhancements, and community initiatives. Archives are available online, and residents are encouraged to subscribe to stay engaged. Safer Rockridge also encourages neighbors to strengthen local connections by organizing block captains and block email lists, simple steps that can significantly improve collective safety.
The organization is currently seeking a volunteer Treasurer to join its board. For more information, to donate, or to get involved, residents are encouraged to visit Safer Rockridge’s website.
