Oakland has long been a source of inspiration for freelance photographer Jerome (Jerry) Parmer. A resident of the Bushrod Park neighborhood, Jerry finds that the Bay Area’s energy, diversity, and urban landscape make it an ideal canvas for his work. “Photos from the area seem to resonate with the local crowd, and I enjoy capturing the city’s unique character,” he says.
Jerry has a particular passion for night photography, and his current exhibition runs through May 13 at the Rockridge Cafe. Titled Night and Day Around the Bay, it showcases his perspective on the Bay Area at different hours, highlighting both its vibrancy and subtle beauty.
“I find the lighting situations at night provide interesting mood elements. I also enjoy the technical challenges that come from working in low light.” Whether photographing illuminated streets, music venues, or community events, he is drawn to the way in which light shapes both the subject and the story.

Photography for Jerry is more than a creative pursuit—it’s a way to actively engage with the world around him. Whether he’s documenting a protest, covering a performance, or simply exploring the streets, his camera keeps him connected to his community.
After a career in medical technology, Jerry decided to pursue the creative arts seriously, channeling his curiosity and technical skills into photography. His work now spans multiple genres, including urban, news, performance, and night photography, though he enjoys experimenting with other styles whenever inspiration strikes.
Outside the frame, he keeps an active lifestyle. You might find him on a tennis court, traveling the region, or walking his dog, Roxie the Wunderpup. His presence in the community, combined with his dedication to sharing his work, continues to make him a fixture of the Bay Area creative scene.
