How Do You Like Your Latté?

How Do You Like Your Latté?

The Rockridge Voice knows its readers — and let’s be honest, in Rockridge, caffeine isn’t just a necessity; it’s an art. On a recent afternoon we set out on a highly scientific (and very caffeinated) mission to taste and compare three neighborhood standouts that are pouring their own spin on the perfect cup (and because they are an easy half-mile walking distance from each other): Ain’t Normal Cafe, Hudson Bay Café and Highwire Coffee Roasters.

Ain’t Normal Café

Opening a café in October 2020 — at the height of the pandemic — might sound, well, ain’t normal. But that’s exactly what Faunus Lucas did. A Rockridge resident who worked his way up from dishwasher to management before launching his own shop, Lucas built something that feels both personal and communal.

Inside, seating is limited, but the window counter is prime real estate for solo sipping and people-watching. Outside, bright yellow umbrellas give the patio a cheerful, almost park-like feel. Families gather, friends linger, laptops open — and yes, kids dart around while parents chat.

The beans are sourced from small, independent roasters — national and local — resulting in a rare rotation of distinctive flavor profiles. The latte is sweet, mellow, rich, and silky smooth — providing a comforting buzz.

One customer told us she used to frequent another neighborhood café but now prefers Ain’t Normal for both its coffee and its ambiance.

Hudson Bay Café

A Rockridge institution for decades, Hudson Bay fills up early — and for good reason. The roomy indoor seating and expansive patio make it a magnet for morning meetings, study sessions, and sunny-day lounging. Owners Sadri Madjlessi and Tanya Anderson revitalized the café more than 20 years ago, and their steady presence shows in the loyal crowd.

The latte arrives foamy and fragrant, with a robust, earthy aroma that feels like a warm handshake. Sadri shared that their current blend is a medium roast made from international beans with added flavor notes — smooth, balanced, dependable.

Regular Indra, who lives across the street (talk about ideal proximity), swears by Hudson Bay for its convenience and the simple joy of sipping outside on a bright afternoon.

Highwire Coffee Roasters

Robert Myers and Rich Avella opened Highwire in 2011 at Market Hall, and has cultivated a devoted following. The interior space is compact — mostly window counter seating — but the sidewalk tables buzz with conversation. (Pro tip: exiting through the inward-swinging doors while juggling multiple drinks requires strategy, or friendly assistance.)

Barista Nick crafted a near-perfect steamed milk heart with confident flair. The latte tasted sweet yet strong, with a distinct aromatic punch. Highwire’s beans are a blend of African and South American varieties, bringing brightness and depth into one polished cup.

The Takeaway

After careful tasting (and a wild caffeine rush), Rockridge Voice reached a definitive conclusion: Rockridge is spoiled with great coffee.

Each café delivers something distinct — whether it’s Hudson Bay’s dependable warmth, Highwire’s polished intensity, or Ain’t Normal’s vibrant community energy. The real winner? Coffee lovers who are lucky enough to call this neighborhood home.
